Calabria
Why Calabria?
When hearing "Southern Italy," a negative image is often evoked. However, after a visit in 1987, we discovered the beauty of this region: a perfect place to unwind and slow down. The tranquility and hospitality of every Calabrian, along with the delightful climate, sea, fresh fish, and local cuisine, made us fall in love with this area.
Imagine walking by a fruit shop or visiting the market in Crotone, smelling the aromas of fresh fruits and vegetables. Or enjoy snorkeling with clear visibility up to 15 meters deep. Hospitality here is a lifestyle, where good friends are always welcome for homemade salami and a glass of wine.
In Calabria, it's all about "live and let live," a culture that never seems to fade. Yes, there are differences, such as less strict adherence to appointments, but the beauty and relaxation more than compensate.
Tourism and Culture
Calabria has not yet been discovered by mass tourism, especially on our southeast side. The authentic population proudly preserves their Calabrian culture, and the friendly, helpful attitude makes connecting easy. The older generation mainly speaks Calabrian, but young people also try to speak Italian and English.
Customs
Unknown can lead to unfamiliarity, but let's look beyond the stereotypes. Crime is present but not in a way that affects daily life. We gladly share our experiences, like leaving the car with the engine running at the tabacchi without problems.
For a relaxing vacation, where you can enjoy the sun, sea, nature, and local traditions, Calabria is highly recommended. Discover it for yourself and be amazed by the beauty of this still undiscovered piece of Italy.
Tip
As a tourist, be cautious with Italian hand gestures, especially in traffic. If you're not familiar with them, don't use them! For a neutral view of Italy, visit objective sites like www.italie.nl, www.dolcevia.comand, www.italiemagazine.nl.
We invite you to enjoy Casa Bahati and everything Calabria has to offer. See you in sunny southern Italy!
